PMS – Premenstrual Syndrome

PMS and and PMDD Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder are conditions which are characterised by worsening mood and emotional symptoms in the lead up to a period. It can include anger, rage, tearfulness, a feeling of not coping, bloating and headaches.

It can be the first symptom of peri-menopause and is often misdiagnosed as depression or anxiety. Severe cases can be misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder and psychosis.

It can be extremely distressing and impactful on quality of life.

Treatment involves hormones either HRT the combined oral contraceptive pill and sometimes GnRH analogues to switch off the ovaries completely.
